Amber Heard's New Movie Just Had The Worst Per Screen Opening Of All Time

This past weekend saw Halloween continue its reign atop the box office in advance of its namesake holiday while A Star is Born and Venom both continued their impressive runs. While admittedly none of them were big name titles, new releases didn't fare nearly as well, especially London Fields. The new film starring Amber Heard just had the worst per screen opening of all time.

London Fields opened in theaters on October 26, and over the weekend it managed only $160,000 from 613 theaters. If you carry the 1, that shakes out to a historically bad $261 per screen average. That is the lowest per screen average ever for a movie opening in that many locations and one of the lowest ever for a wide release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

To put London Fields' performance in perspective, another new release, Luca Guadagnino's remake Suspiria, managed $179,806. That's might not seem like a lot more, but Suspiria was playing in two locations, not 613.

The abysmal per screen average gives London Fields an ignominious place in the record books, and its overall gross doesn't fare much better. Citing Box Office Mojo's database, which dates back to 1980, London Fields' $160,000 opening weekend is the second worst opening for a wide release (600+ theaters) behind the far less star-studded 2008 film Proud American, which managed only $96,076.

Once all the beans are counted, London Fields' opening weekend total could shift, but it will still be below $200,000, making it only the second wide release film, along with Proud American, to fail to clear that hurdle.

Now some of you may be asking at this point, 'What the heck is London Fields?,' and you'd be forgiven for doing so. The film from director Matthew Cullen has been in the can for a while now and has languished under legal drama. First there was a dispute between the director and the producer, and then the producers sued star Amber Heard, who then countersued that her nudity agreement was violated.

Those legal issues were sorted out, which is why this film that was set to release back in 2015 is finally in theaters. Although it's not clear how much money was sunk into promotion for the film, so this box office performance may not have been much of a surprise.

London Fields is based on a novel by author Martin Amis and tells the story of Nicola Six, a femme fatale and clairvoyant who begins a relationship with three men, knowing that one of them will be her killer. The film stars Amber Heard, Cara Delevigne, Billy Bob Thornton, Theo James, Jim Sturgess and features a cameo from Amber Heard's ex, Johnny Depp.

Reviews for the film have been abysmal, as it currently sports a humiliating 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes. I don't think the trailers did it any favors either. The only thing the trailers seem to convey is that Amber Heard is attractive and thus other characters in the film want her. Beyond that, there isn't much clarity about the story or much reason to want to see it.

While London Fields will occupy a humiliating spot in the record books, Amber Heard should bounce back in a big way soon. The actress next stars as Mera in the DCEU flick Aquaman, which should do much better at the box office than London Fields.

The Insane Amount Saudi Arabia Movie Tickets Could Cost

How much would you be willing to pay for a ticket to see an eagerly anticipated movie? $10? $15? $20? What if you hadn't seen a movie in a theater in decades, possibly ever, or had to leave your country to do so? Such is the situation now in Saudi Arabia where the government is now allowing public cinemas after a 35-year ban. AMC is the first exhibitor to get a license in the Middle Eastern country, with tickets expected to run a lofty $20 a pop. However, given the demand after such a drought, word on the street is the ticket prices could rise to between $30 and an eye-watering $35 each.

The reason for such absurdly high prices? Why supply and demand, of course. Speaking at CinemaCon (via Variety) on Monday, AMC chief Adam Aron said that the price is too low. The level of demand from an audience that hasn't enjoyed a theatrical experience in its country in a generation makes price not an issue. Whereas here such prices would result in empty theaters, in Saudi Arabia the demand is so high that there will be more than enough people willing to pay $30+ per ticket. This rapidly inflating ticket price isn't all AMC looking to turn a tidy profit either. There is a high sales tax factoring in as well as an additional 25% sales tax that the Saudi Arabian government is levying on entertainment products.

This is just the beginning, too, as Saudi Arabia is being viewed as a major potential market by the movie industry. A huge 70% of the country's 32 million people are under 30, causing analysts to predict that opening this market could result in Saudi Arabia being one of the top-ten movie markets in a matter of years. Things are moving fast, but there is still a long way to go. Saudi Arabia doesn't have the existing infrastructure, so everything is being done from scratch, with theaters being built and the country still working on a ratings system, as well as a censorship process.

The first public cinema began test screenings on April 18th at an invitation only event in Riyadh. Black Panther was the debut film at the AMC theater. The showing also broke cultural ground by allowing men and women to sit together. This is part of broader reforms taking place in the traditionally conservative country as it aims to diversify economically and institute slightly more liberal policies like allowing women to drive. AMC plans to open 40 cinemas in 15 Saudi cities over the next five years, and there are expected to be 350 theaters in the country by 2030. Soon, Saudi audiences will be able to enjoy the world's most famous movie star, Dwayne Johnson, on the big screen as Rampage has been given a release date while Avengers: Infinity War is currently being shown to censors.

Hopefully, as more theater open up in the country and cinemas become less rare, prices will come back down to a reasonable level. But considering that up until recently if you wanted to see a movie in theaters, you'd have to leave the country, $35 isn't the worst thing in the world. Even though attendance is down here in the U.S., ticket prices rose to an all-time high last year of $8.97, not factoring in premium formats or 3D. So next time you have to pony up for a movie ticket, remember it could be much, much more expensive.

Dark Phoenix Footage At WonderCon Shows Off Outer Space Chaos And An Emotional Battle

Though Dark Phoenix has been in the works for a while, we really havent seen all that much footage from the blockbuster. Sure, weve seen a couple of trailers come out, but when considered in the context of how much time there was between previews, what weve seen doesnt amount to much. Its a bit of a surprise, given that the film is now just a few months away from release, but the marketing for the movie broke the drought in a big way today by showing off a couple of full scenes at WonderCon.

20th Century Fox held a special Dark Phoenix panel at the Anaheim Convention Center today, and in addition to having a panel featuring a bunch of stars and filmmakers, the film also showed off nearly 20 minutes of footage. Its all pretty cool stuff, and you can find the details about it below:

The sequence started with a shot from behind the X Mansion, with the basketball court opening up and the Blackbird launching from the hanger underneath. The X-Men are on a mission - on board are Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) but it isnt a typical Earthbound adventure. For the first time ever they are making their way into space, and its clear that its not an environment in which they are totally comfortable.

News stations from around the world are broadcasting the event, showcasing the popularity of the worlds first superhero team. While the X-Men are on the move, Professor X (James McAvoy) is in Cerebro communicating with NASA, who are reporting an incident with a shuttle in trouble involving a solar flare. As we see through the eyes of the mutant team, however, its not exactly a normal cosmic event, as it looks more like there is a dangerous mass floating and getting closer to the troubled spaceship which is shown spinning out of control with a busted thruster.

Calling the shots, Mystique notes that before they can do anything they need to stop the rotation of shuttle, but Nightcrawler notes that he cant teleport in because he cant see into it. The job then falls to Cyclops, who is told that he needs to blast the thruster and stop the spin. He goes below deck, lines his specialized visor up with a periscope-esque targeting system, and successfully fires an optic blast that gets the in-trouble ship to stop.

With the situation more manageable, Nightcrawler and Quicksilver are called into action to teleport to the NASA vessel and meanwhile Storm seals the damage thats been done with ice. In hyper-speed mode, Quicksilver takes the seatbelts off all of the astronauts, and then tosses them towards the back of the shuttle where Nightcrawler is waiting. Once everyone is collected, they BAMF and find themselves back on the Blackbird.

All seems well and good and the call is made to head home until one of the rescued astronauts points out that the mission isnt done yet. Their commander was in the airlock trying to fix the thruster at the time of the rescue, and he remains there with the solar flare getting closer and closer. Mystique wants to leave, not wanting to risk the members of her team for one more person, but Professor X insists that they stay and do everything they possibly can to save the remaining life in danger.

With Storm no longer able to keep the ship together with ice, Jean Grey boldly claims that she can slow the destruction, but she needs to get closer to the ship. Both Cyclops and Professor X back her up, though Beast notes that there is less than a minute before the solar flare hits and becomes too dangerous to survive. The call is made, and Nightcrawler and Jean teleport over, with the powerful telepath keeping the construction of the ship together. The commander is saved by Nightcrawler, but as time runs out Jean finds herself trapped as the flare hits. Cyclops screams asking where Jean is, but all they can do is helplessly watch from afar as the cosmic energy engulfs the damaged shuttle.

With Jean, we watch as she starts to absorb the energy screaming as she does and its an experience that it seems Professor X has right along with her. What adds an interesting note, however, is that while part of the solar flare seems to try and reach out to the Blackbird, Jean uses her concentration to divert it, and winds up absorbing all of it. The shuttle explodes and everyone thinks that Jean is dead. Once all the chaos is over, Nightcrawler teleports and brings her to be back with the X-Men and while the group initially mourns, she then opens her eyes to reveal that she is alive (with a bit of orange swimming around in her irises).

The X-Men land back on Earth to much fanfare, and the celebrating continues when they get back to the X Mansion. Everyone is happy, and Professor X is feeling enough pride to cancel all classes for the rest of the day, but Mystique is definitely not happy about the whole situation. After Xavier checks in on Jean Grey, sending her to get a full medical exam, Mystique takes him into his office, and she has a frank discussion with him about the increased risks that are being taken. She is worried about the safety of the recruits, and is afraid that the wheelchair-bound telepath is taking on bigger and bigger challenges just for the sake of his ego. He counters, however, by acknowledging that mutants are being accepted unlike any other time in history, and that only one bad day could result in their kind being hated and despised again. Its clear that its not an issue that is going to be solved with one discussion, but at the very end Mystique gets in one last shot, noting not only that its been a minute since Xavier last risked his own life, and that women are so consistently saving the men that the team name should be changed to X-Women.

Jumping ahead in the movie (and clearly skipping over some major, major developments), the other big sequence in the Dark Phoenix footage showed off a showdown that seemingly happens in the second half of the film so if you dont wish to be spoiled on anything, you may want to stop reading here.

Starting with Xavier in Cerebro with Cyclops, its made clear that Jean Grey has started to go off the deep end, and that crap is really starting to hit the fan. Beast has teamed up with Magneto, and they have decided that Jean needs to die which, naturally, Professor X is unwilling to let happen. He psychically connects with Nightcrawler, showing the place where he needs to go, and together they travel along with Storm (after some argument) to try and stop the assassination.

The members of the X-Men then quickly find themselves in a confrontation with Magneto and Beast in Central Park, as well as two other mutants: one, Red Lotus, with braids that basically act as prehensile tentacles, and another, Selene, with the ability to control minds. Following a verbal scuffle (including an F-bomb from Cyclops), a battle begins as Magneto makes his way towards a building where Jean Grey and Jessica Chastains mystery character are staying, and they know that he is on his way to kill Phoenix what is basically spelled out as an act of revenge for the killing of Mystique. The fight rages on, but the Master of Magnetism gets the upper hand when he uses his powers to pull an entire subway car out of the ground and positions it to block the entrance of the aforementioned building.

Once inside, Magneto is confronted by Jean Grey and Jessica Chastains character, and his big move is executed by pulling a metal banister from its spokes and pointing the jagged end at Jean. As emotional as he is, though, he cant go through with it. Unfortunately for him, it seems that Jean doesnt feel the same way. With her heightened abilities, she starts to crush Magnetos head with the villains helmet though it cuts to black before we can see what happens.

Overall, the footage was interesting if not just because it shows off a lot of new stuff that we havent actually seen in past X-Men movies. The titular team operates in a completely different way than other iterations particularly with the way in which it pairs certain mutant abilities together in order to achieve a certain goal. Its also a bit that gives us quite a lot of clarity when it comes to where all of these characters stand within this story particularly Professor X, Mystique, Magneto, Cyclops, and particularly Jean Grey.

Weve obviously been waiting for Dark Phoenix for a long time, but its now actually almost here. Though that last reveal looks to have confirmed one of the biggest plot points that Captain Marvel has to offer: the Skrulls appear to have totally infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. by time the film has gotten into high gear.

The shots that really tip us off are at 01:44 and 01:46 in the Captain Marvel trailer, so feel free to re-watch the trailer below before we get started:

As you see, and hear, above, we get quite a bit of Talos action in this latest sneak peek. Not only does he get to utter the line, "Would you like to know what you really are?" but he also gets to show off both his Skrull and humanoid forms from Captain Marvel. At 01:44, you can see Talos in his natural Skrull form, and at 01:46, we see him disguised as a well-dressed human of some sort of authority.

That authority, judging by the context clues in the trailer, as well as what we've heard so far, begins to paint a big picture that could tie through not only the first 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also straight into the future of the franchise. Looking at where and how Talos is standing in his human form, it definitely looks like he's in charge of the agents that are storming the hanger in Captain Marvel. So not only does it look like S.H.I.E.L.D. has been compromised, it looks like the threat comes from the tippy top of the command structure yet again.

Or rather, to begin with, considering Captain Marvel is one big flashback flick that takes place in the 1990s, complete with younger versions of Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. Which leads to another point that this potential Skrull reveal could be making: Talos is probably the key to Nick Fury rising in the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D's power structure. While he's a desk jockey during the '90s, and he's ready to leave S.H.I.E.L.D at this point, Fury will probably be the one to find out that Talos is not the human he's masquerading as.

Should this be the case, that lays out how Nick Fury not only builds his rather distrustful school of thought in life, it also might indicate how Captain Marvel sets him up to gain a big promotion / lose an eye. If Fury knows Talos isn't on the up and up, you've got to assume their conflict will be the big B-story fight, while Carol Danvers fights the larger menace of the film -- more than likely being Jude Law's fanatical Kree, who may or may not be Yon-Rogg.

But let's step back from Nick Fury's potential origins for a moment, and talk about something that Talos's presence might be indicating. Say that he has, in fact, infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ranks, while in disguise. Not only does this mean that the super secret spy agency has even more of a history of being the least secure organization all sides of the Potomac, it also means the universe might have been softened up for a Skrull invasion for quite some time.

Think about the long-term implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the Skrulls have been slowly making their way to Earth, and other points in the universe. Not only would this bring the Secret Invasion plot line into the MCU fold, that in turn would put Secret War on the table, as well.

With Secret Invasion putting Skrulls on Earth, replacing super heroes and triggering the formation of the super group known as "the Illuminati," the next big conflict in the Marvel Cinematic Universe might deal with both Skrull plotlines pulled from the page of Marvel Comics' two influential event series. Which is exactly what is needed in the MCU, as the Thanos threat likely will draw to a close in Avengers 4.

There's a lot of potential threads that a Skrull infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D can entail. There might even be a possibility that Captain Marvel spawns some more flashback sequels, leaving Ben Mendelsohn's Talos in control of S.H.I.E.L.D. for quite a while in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Should that be the case, we might not see him and Nick Fury fight just yet, but it's a fight that feels like it's bound to happen at some point or another.

For now though, the usage of the Skrulls looks instrumental to the plot of Captain Marvel, and the degree of their importance seems to be tipped off in this latest look at the film's story. Seeing as there will probably be at least one more trailer before the film's March debut, we'll probably learn more about the Skrulls in that go-round than we could imagine. But if this theory holds up, there could be a lot of excitement that's left to discover once the threat of Captain Marvel is vanquished; and it would all begin with Talos.
