Why James Mangold Hates When Logan Is Called High-Octane

James Mangold's Logan is a lot of things. It's Hugh Jackman's final outing as Wolverine. It's a hit, R-rated comic book movie. It's even an ode to the western genre. You can call it many things, but as CinemaBlend learned during the 2018 Writers Guild Association Beyond Words Panel presented by Audi last week, you should not call Logan "high-octane" in front of James Mangold. Faced with that description of the film, Mangold told the audience:

How myself and Scott Frank and Michael, on Logan, you know, we were very clear that this is a movie, like from Page 2 we had kind of a little manifesto built into the script about how this isn't gonna be another one of those CG fuckathons where if someone falls out a building and... You know, there's kind of an arms race among these kinds of movies. That's why it broke my heart when Claudia described our film as 'high-octane,' it's like stick a knife in my eye. I'd never wanna make a film someone calls fucking 'high-octane.' It's like what a clich, 'oh the action movie guy made a movie, it's high-octane.' It's like, I tried to make an Ozu film with mutants.

James Mangold doesn't seem to have a problem with people praising Logan, but he would rather see us stay away from the wording that he considers "clich." By his estimation, calling Logan a "high-octane" movie pigeonholes him as an "action movie guy," which in turn doesn't recognize the film's more artistic influences from Japanese cinema. This definitely seems to tie into Mangold's other recent comments about disliking post-credit scenes and Easter eggs as well. Despite the fact that Logan is inspired by comic book source material, he seems particularly interested in disassociating from that label.

That's not to say that Logan doesn't have its own fair share of sequences that fit the "high-octane" bill. Despite a budget lower than many other comic book movies of a similar ilk, the film utterly embraces its hard-R rating in a serious way and delivers some truly breathtaking action sequences, such as the ending, which sees Wolverine battle a younger version of himself in the form of X-24.

James Mangold wanted to make something with more substance than a conventional action movie or a sanitized blockbuster seen in franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DCEU. That said, he still delivered some great action along the way, and that's something worth celebrating in addition to its artistic accolades.

High-octane or not, audiences will get a chance to watch Logan duke it out against all of the other Oscar nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay next month when The Academy Awards airs at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Guardians Of The Galaxys Sean Gunn Seemingly Reveals Kraglins Fate In Avengers 4

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a state of flux, given the events of Avengers: Infinity War and the forthcoming Avengers 4 movie. The Russo Brothers shocked audiences by having Josh Brolin's Thanos win, and destroy half the galaxy with a snap of his finger. Tons of fan favorite characters faded to dust before our eyes, although there are plenty who are still unaccounted for in the wake of the snap. This includes Guardians of the Galaxy tertiary character Kraglin, played by Sean Gunn. Gunn also stands in for Rocket during filming, and seems to have revealed if Kraglin survived the snap, saying:

I think I can say this: I don't think Kraglin's story is finished yet. I think the fans will, at least, get to know what happens with Kraglin, even though I can't share that right now.

Well, this is exciting. While not an official confirmation, Sean Gunn seems to indicate that we'll see his Marvel character in the flesh when Avengers 4 arrives in theaters. Considering how many heroes bit the dust during Infinity War's conclusion, the surviving characters are going to need all the help they can get to face off against Thanos, and possibly revive the characters who fell during the horrifying final scene.

Sean Gunn's comments to Tulsa World carry a particular weight, considering how unsure things are within the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. When James Gunn was fired in July for decade-old offensive Tweets, it put the Guardians in jeopardy. While they're set to appear in Avengers 4, it's unclear if/when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will pick up speed, now that its lost its visionary director/writer. It also seems possible that the House of Mouse could abandon the franchise altogether. And since no one knows what's happening with Guardians 3, Sean Gun's comments must allude to Kraglin's appearance in next Avengers movie.

Now the question is: how could Kraglin enter the narrative of Avengers 4? The upcoming movie has been teased to feature a time jump, so perhaps Kraglin's character is associated with Rocket. Bradley Cooper's gun toting rodent was the only Guardian to survive the finger snap (although Nebula also lived over on Titan). Maybe Rocket hit up Kraglin for help. After all, he's got Yondu's awesome arrow. Let's just hope he's gotten better at controlling it since his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 credits scene.

Sean Gunn has an interesting perspective on the MCU, as he's got an onscreen role as Kraglin, and offscreen role filming for Rocket, and is also brothers with James Gunn.

At one point the world was calling her "America's Sweetheart" thanks to an off-handed comment from Nora Ephron, but now, many years later in her career, Meg Ryan says she really never wanted to be an actress in the first place. Speaking at a Goop Wellness Summit with Gwyneth Paltrow, the actress admitted she had been "very reactive instead of proactive" during a time in her career. She also described how she never actually wanted to be in the acting business, at all. She said:

I didn't really aim to be an actor, I was a journalism major at school, and a curious person, and I wanted to go back out into the world and figure out who I was--am--in relationship to other things and other people and other environment.

While speaking with Gwyneth Paltrow via (E!), Meg Ryan touched on her heyday in the eighties and through the nineties, mentioning that really she "had a lot of fun" as an actress but that it was never something that was a huge calling for her. She also touched on the fact that she actually filmed a movie with Paltrow when he son was only three-months old, questioning "what was wrong" with her to want to work when she had such a young child at home. It seems the actress has some guilt over her successful acting career, and so when the parts stopped rolling in at a regular rate, she just rolled with the punches and figured out what other values the world held for her.

After taking a small part in Top Gun in 1986, Meg Ryan's career really picked up in 1989 when she starred in When Harry Met Sally. A year later she did Joe Versus the Volcano. Her heyday was in the nineties when she led such hits as Sleepless in Seattle, French Kiss, City of angels, You've Got Mail, Proof of Life and Kate & Leopold (opposite a young Hugh Jackman). She also talked a little bit more about what it was like when she was still uber-famous, noting,

When you're a famous person, there's a certain degree of blankness that needs to happen so that people can project on you. Despite what you may think, people don't really want to know all that much about you. They want to imagine the best or the worst. So when you're caught in that, it really is interesting because you get reactions that have almost nothing to do with you and some that have everything to do with you, and you have to be this jiu-jitsu master to figure out what mirror you should actually be looking in.

Meg Ryan is still acting, but her output has slowed down quite a bit from her heyday. In fact, there was a period between 2009's Serious Moonlight and Curb Your Enthusiasm guest stint and 2013's Web Therapy when she didn't act at all. Since then, she's appeared in Fan Girl, the pilot for the failed series How I Met Your Dad and a movie called Ithaca. How I Met Your Dad was supposed to be her big comeback, and when it didn't happen, her career has stayed rather low key. Regardless, from what the actress was saying, acting was never a big deal to her anyway. Plus, she's left behind a body of work she can certainly be proud of, so what's next?
