Phil Lord And Chris Miller Snuck Some Personal Easter Eggs Into Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Phil Lord and Chris Miller have a long history in animation, and while they are now best known for films like Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and The LEGO Movie, it was with the cult television series Clone High that they got their start. Obviously they've come a long way since they, but they definitely haven't forgotten their roots, as evidenced by the special Easter eggs that they included in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse:

It was because of Clone High that I first became a fan of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, so I was delighted when it came up in conversation when I sat down with them a few weeks ago at the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Los Angeles press day. Knowing that there were many little hidden details featured all throughout the film, I asked if they had any particular favorites. After acknowledging the special nod to writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli -- the creators of Miles Morales -- the duo made special mention of the references back to their first television show.

Clone High -- which was an animated series following the high school adventures of the clones of historical icons -- only lasted one season, never seeing its main characters graduate, but Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has a special callback to an institute of higher learning from that series. Specifically, there is a poster for Clone College, featuring the visage of Abraham Lincoln (voiced by Will Forte in the show), located in Times Square.

But that's not all. One of the weird trademarks of Clone High is that it had either a dolphin or a dolphin sound in every episode, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller have kept that tradition going during their movie career. All of their movies, both animated and live-action, have included the sound of a dolphin, and that includes Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (even though they didn't actually direct it). It's not immediately noticeable, as I actually didn't catch it during my first viewing of the feature, but according to the writers/producers it can be heard during all of the massive chaos in the big climactic third act fight sequence.

The Clone High references are clearly close to the hearts of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but they definitely aren't the only ones featured in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. As we've written about, there are fake Seth Rogen and Edgar Wright movies that are advertised -- titles Hold Your Horses and From Dusk Till Shaun -- and if you pay attention you'll notice that the number 42 appears a lot, which is a number important in the history of Marvel Comics, but also itself a reference to A Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. Hell, if you look at the television being watched by Uncle Aaron when he is introduced you'll notice he is watching Donald Glover on an episode of Community, which was a huge source of inspiration for the creation of Miles Morales.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is a film that is going to be immensely rewarding when watched over and over again, as there are tiny, special little details littered throughout that you're not paying attention to as much while you're trying to follow the plot. It's a little extra special in that way, on beyond just being a truly phenomenal experience.

Star Wars Fans Got Too Excited About A Photo Today

Update: Earlier today, a picture flew around the Internet that was posted by Star Wars' Dan Mindel. It appeared to be a set with some lights from the upcoming Star Wars Episode IX. Fans on Twitter got excited, which caused many outlets to get excited and run stories. Upon further review, however, it seems the picture in question is actually a still from John Carter, which Dan Mindel also worked on. There's nothing like Star Wars to generate the most aggressive opinions, both pro and con, and to generate lengthy think pieces about a set photo that's actually from another movie entirely. Star Wars Episode IX is currently in production and that means it's Christmas for Star Wars fans as every few days we get something new to pour over. Today's gift is a picture of the set at, I believe, Pinewood Studios in London. The new film's director of photography shared an image in which he, unsurprisingly, was most interested in the lighting, but the picture shows off a bit more than that, including some structures that will clearly make up part of a set. Check it out.

Whatever your job is, you probably geek out a little bit when it comes to certain aspects of it. That's really all Director of Photography Dan Mindel is doing here, as he's just super excited that he gets to work with a great light source since that's sort of important to his job. However, the space lights he's showing off aren't all we see, as below them we get a glimpse of a set that's currently in construction for Star Wars Episode IX.

Of course, we don't see a lot here, it's unlikely Dan Mindel would have been allowed to post the image if we did, but what we do see is worth investigating. The walls are covered in green screen, which means that what's being built here is only a fraction of what we'll actually see on the screen when this scene ends up in the final cut of the film. We also see arch-like structures which appear to look like they're artificial like they could be part of a building or a ship, rather than a cave or other "natural" structure, though that's little more than a guess.

What might be more interesting, however, might be the thing that we don't really see in the picture. There's a platform on a boom that appears to be strategically placed in the picture so that we can't see what's on the floor of the set. Of course, since we can't see it, it's the part that many fans have become the most interested in. One popular fan theory making the rounds online is that it's a mosaic showing the Prime Jedi symbol, the image of a Jedi set in between the light and the dark sides. The image was viewable in the First Jedi Temple on Ahch-To in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so it's certainly possible that it could show up again. Having said that I don't see anything in what we can see here that gives me any indication of what it is. It appears that the space lights are lighting it up and so any image that's on the ground is looking washed out, if there's anything there at all.

What's Going On With Edge Of Tomorrow 2, According To Christopher McQuarrie

A sequel to the well-praised Edge of Tomorrow has been in development for some time. Now the writer of the first film has an update for fans. Unfortunately, any fans expecting to hear that the movie might go before cameras anytime soon will be disappointed. Christopher McQuarrie admits he has no clue when we might actually see the movie. However, all hope is not lost because the film is still an active concern. According to McQuarrie...

Christopher McQuarrie gave this response on Twitter to a fan asking what the status of Edge of Tomorrow 2, or Live Die Repeat and Repeat, as it is otherwise known. While the project has been in development for some time, and was apparently born from a rock-solid idea for a follow-up, the movie has seemed to stall out. The last thing we heard, several months ago, was Emily Blunt saying that a new script was in the works, though it was apparently based on the same idea from director Doug Liman. Liman, for his part, has not been shy about playing up just how impressive this new movie was going to be. However, it appears that the idea is so big that it has become difficult to write.

The first Edge of Tomorrow saw Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt fighting an alien invasion via time travel, as Tom Cruise's character had the ability to repeat the same time period over and over again each time he died, thus learning new information about the adversary each time. The first film wrapped with the invasion seemingly defeated, so exactly how a sequel would move the story forward isn't clear, but it seems that's sort of where the new movie's idea comes from.

However, while we may not be getting the Edge of Tomorrow sequel any time soon, it does still appear that the plan is to get it at some point. Christopher McQuarrie is clear that the movie is being actively worked on, it's not sitting on an empty shelf someplace being forgotten about. Tom Cruise is busy right now filming Top Gun: Maverick, so he wouldn't be able to jump into the movie right now anyway. Although, the actor's schedule appears to be mostly open once that is done, and we're also not aware of anything big that Emily Blunt is working on, having recently wrapped filming on Disney's Jungle Cruise, so we may actually be coming into a good moment in time to film Edge of Tomorrow 2, assuming everything else is ready to go as well.

At this point, it seems unlikely anybody is holding their breath waiting for this sequel, so hopefully, they'll take their time and make sure that when they do make the movie, they make something great.
