One Way Taika Waititi Made The Creation Of Korg Harder On Thor: Ragnarok

It's not uncommon for a director to insert themselves into the project they're working on, especially if they already have plenty of acting experience. That's just what Taika Waititi did for Thor: Ragnarok. In addition to helming the God of Thunder's third standalone MCU adventure, Waititi played Korg, the Kronan warrior who Thor met during his time on Sakaar. Because Korg was an all-CGI creation, it was particularly difficult bringing him to life for Thor: Ragnarok, and for visual effects supervisor Jake Morrison, the process became more challenging whenever Waititi would come up with new lines during post-production. Morrison recalled:

I would say the one thing I did learn on this is, once Taika discovered that he could just come up with new punch lines and zingers in the edit suite, was when my life got a lot harder.

Taikia Waititi is known for encouraging improvisation among his actors, and he admitted that "probably 80%" of Thor: Ragnarok was improvised, so it's not surprising to learn that he came up with new pieces of funny dialogue for Korg long after the cameras had stopped rolling. From a comedic perspective, this can pay off, but for Jake Morrison, the man who's overseeing the creation of Thor: Ragnarok's visual effects, it poses all-new challenges that need to be handled. As Morrison noted later in his interview with Comicbook.com, not only was working on Korg hard because the character's actor was also the director, but because comedy is harder to effectively pull off than drama, then he had to ensure that a creature made up of rocks could look "realistic" and still be funny to the audience. Morrison continued:

So, the fact that, that would rest firmly upon the visual effects department shoulders, the fact that we had to make the audience laugh, we had to completely bring them into the story and make them believe the character, even though he's 7'6" rock monster made of 1,300 rocks or whatever that it was. And literally each rock you had to move against each other, but never deformed or look like latex. They're all sort of impossible tasks.

Thor: Ragnarok was one of the funnier MCU movies, particularly in comparison with the previous two Thor movies, and judging by the overall critical reception, Taika Waititi made the right call with that tonal shift. That being said, it's understandable why the Korg portions of the movie were particularly difficult for Jake Morrison given both the average visual effects obstacles and Waititi's improvisational nature. If Morrison works on another movie where Waititi is playing Korg, hopefully this experience won't make the next one quite as stressful.

Thor: Ragnarok is now available for digital purchase, and you can buy the Blu-ray/DVD starting March 6. While Korg's next big screen appearance hasn't been announced yet, Taika Waititi has floated several ideas for MCU projects he could direct next. With Black Panther now playing in theaters, the next MCU installment, Avengers: Infinity War, will be released on May 4.

What May Be Going On With The New Mutants Reshoots

The wait for The New Mutants, the horror-oriented X-Men spinoff, has grown even longer. Last night, it was announced that both X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants have been pushed back to February 14, 2019 and August 2, 2019, respectively. The New Mutants had already been pushed from April 13 to February 22, 2019 back in January, and with this newest scheduling change, that means it'll be a little under a year and a half until we see director and co-writer Josh Boone's contribution to the X-Men franchise fully realized. So why was The New Mutants delayed yet again? Apparently it's because the movie is undergoing massive reshoots that are overhauling a decent portion of the movie.

While X-Men: Dark Phoenix being delayed three months is reportedly due to scheduling conflicts, apparently the situation with The New Mutants is more complicated. Following the movie's first delay, we learned the cast would be returning for reshoots. A new character is expected to be added, while one rumor claimed the extra filming is being done to make the story scarier. Now sources who spoke with Collider say that Josh Boone delivered a cut of The New Mutants that he liked, but 20th Century Fox wants the movie to be more tonally distinctive, akin to what Deadpool and Logan were like. As a result, apparently The New Mutants' reshoots have been expanded, with potentially as much as 50% of the movie being redone, as well as a character or two being added to the cast who will be major players, not just cameos.

Reshoots have become a common step in the blockbuster filmmaking process. Sometimes that extra filming period is only needed to redo a few scenes, other times it's intended to make significant changes to the story. Assuming this update about The New Mutants is legitimate, the horror movie definitely falls into the latter category. I can understand Fox wanting to ensure that The New Mutants feels unique giving how successful Deadpool and Logan were, and obviously if these reshoots ensure that the final product is better, then the cast and crew should take that extra time. Nevertheless, this does sound particularly drastic, and it will be interesting to learn later down the line exactly what has changed for this movie compared to what was being prepared for release next month.

The New Mutants will follow a group of five mutant teenagers who are locked in a creepy facility against their will, requiring them to use their are abilities to fight for survival. The main cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, a.k.a. Magic; Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa, a.k.a. Sunspot; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, a.k.a. Mirage; and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

Jumanji Box Office: Holy Crap, Welcome To The Jungle Is Number One Again

Last week, Jake Kasdan's Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle saw its long reign at the Number One spot come to an end, with Maze Runner: The Death Cure managing to be the first film in three straight weeks to beat it at the box office. Shockingly, however, it turns out that the adventure movie just can't be kept down, as once again it is once again at the top of the charts. Check out the full Top 10 below!

When Sony Pictures first put Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle in theaters in early December, many questioned the move. After all, it was positioned just one week after the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was posed to dominate the box office for weeks. Prognosticators certainly weren't wrong on this front, but what nobody could have predicted is the immensely long legs that the comedy has demonstrated. Jumanji was in second place for its first four weekends, but has been the number one movie for every weekend in 2018 thus far - and is the first December release since 1998 to grab a number one spot at the box office in February (not even Avatar pulled that off).

Obviously Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle isn't banking huge numbers at this time of year, but its overall totals to date and still incredibly impressive. It was made for reportedly only $90 million (certainly modest by modern blockbuster standards), and the most recent figures say that its global total stands at $855.4 million. That puts it in 60th place all-time, and after tomorrow it will be crowned Dwayne Johnson's biggest domestic hit ever, toppling Furious 7's $353 million total. It won't be catching up with either Furious 7 or The Fate of the Furious internationally, as those two films made $1.5 and $1.2 billion, respectively, but there' no denying that this is a massive hit.

The only new wide release to come out on Friday was The Spierig brothers' Winchester, which didn't exactly impress. It surely didn't carry a massive budget (Lionsgate hasn't reported how much it was made for), but the studio probably isn't incredibly happy with a third place finish and a $9.3 million haul. The movie boasts some star power with Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke playing key roles in the feature, but it wasn't exactly supported by any buzz, given that it wasn't actually screened for critics (those who paid to see it have contributed to an 9 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes). Folks also probably shouldn't expect it to produce any Jumanji-like legs in the face of critical bashings, as CinemaScore says that audiences only gave it a "B-."

Looking at the Top 10 from a more macro perspective, you may notice that the bulk of the titles aren't movies that actually came out in the last few weeks, but instead have actually been around for a while (either in wide or limited release). Half of them, in fact, have been around for nearly two months now, as January titles like Proud Mary and The Commuter proved to have zero staying power. In that sense, 2018 is clearly off to a seriously rocky start, but hopefully the next month of movies will start turning things around.

We should start seeing the box office starting really kicking into gear this Friday, with the finale of the Fifty Shades trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed, set to come out in wide release; along with Clint Eastwood's The 15:17 To Paris and the family-friendly Peter Rabbit.
