Looks Like The Candyman Reboot Is Taking The Character To New Places

1992s Candyman was a tale about folk legends returning in the modern world, as Tony Todds legendary boogeyman had been seen in the crumbling slums of Chicagos Cabrini-Green projects. So when a reboot was announced, with Us mastermind Jordan Peele as a co-writer and producer, people were wondering just how this new take would differ from the previous version. While there isn't any specific knowledge of how much things will change this go around, it sounds like whatever is planned is being kept underwraps because of how fresh and new it's going to be.

According to recent reports, the magic word of gentrification has now been thrown into the Candyman mix, as it looks like hes back in his old stomping grounds. And rather than operate as merely a reboot of the iconic character, director Nia DaCosta, who has a deeply rooted love of the character much like Peele himself, has reinforced that that this new film is a spiritual sequel to the original film; with a strategy she's not ready to reveal yet.

However, Nia DaCosta's hand was forced just a little bit, as she had to go on the record as stating that the previously cast Yahya Abdul-Mateen II isnt quite the new face of Candyman himself. When discussing the film with Collider, the director clarified that point thusly:

Well, its been slightly misreported. I cant say whats happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but hes not replacing Tony Todd. Thats been reported, and I was just like, I dont know what to say about this. This is not right.

So whatever is happening with this new Candyman film, it sounds like not only is it something so off the beaten path that it needs secrecy. But its so secret that we dont even know what Abdul-Mateen II s exact role will be. Fresh off of his role as Black Manta in James Wans Aquaman, the moment that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was announced as being connected to Candyman, it felt pretty natural that hed be the new inhabitant of the Clive Barker created character. But now, with DaCosta making these recent remarks, it sounds like theres room for Tony Todd to return as of yet.

Much like the talk surrounding Peter Weller and a potential return to the Robocop franchise, Todd seems to quite possibly be in the mix for this modern refresh. While the actor has previously talked about how a potential reboot would be a welcomed, if not bittersweet, prospect, the labeling of this new Candyman film as a pseudo-sequel just might have been the ticket to get Tony Todd onboard. Fans are eager to see him slip back on the fur coat that made him the intimidating force that made the rounds through two additional sequels.

Seeing Tony Todd potentially come back as Candyman would only be beat by the prospect of seeing him also return to the Final Destination franchise a series that also looks to be undergoing a reboot of sorts in the near future. Its all speculation at this point, but with Candymans new lease on life being able to hook into the previous history of the character, should it choose to, is something all too exciting not to push for.

Candyman brings sweets to the sweet once again on June 12, 2020. However, thats over a year away, and 2019 still has plenty of delights to send your way in the coming year. So visit our release schedule, and get a load of whats headed your way.

Vice Reviews Are In, Here's What The Critics Are Saying

Most 2018 movies expected to be in the conversation come awards season have already opened in theaters, but there are a few stragglers looking to make waves late in the game, including Adam McKay's Vice. The director of The Big Short wrote and directed this film that stars Christian Bale as Vice President Dick Cheney. A biopic from an Oscar winner, starring a host of acclaimed actors, anchored by an unrecognizable lead, Vice has all the makings of a contender.

While Vice doesn't come out until Christmas Day, the film has screened and reviews are in to let us know if the film's pedigree all adds up to something special. For CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg, the answer is a resounding 'yes' as he gave the film 5 stars, praising the work of everyone involved, especially director Adam McKay. Eric said:

Vice is vital and important filmmaking, delivered in a unique and incredible way by an exceptional filmmaker.

After films like Anchorman, The Other Guys and Step Brothers, Adam McKay took on real world issues, while still employing his comedic chops in The Big Short. Audiences familiar with that film may find something similar with Vice, as it makes the business of bureaucracy entertaining and informative, as IGN's William Bibbiani explained:

Vice has been told with all the caustic wit and self-righteousness that we've come to expect from McKay, and if you're on his side, you'll probably marvel at his clever storytelling, the impressive performances of his huge ensemble cast, and the way he makes learning, for lack of a better word, 'fun.'

Christian Bale has become known for physical transformations and with Vice, he does so as an enigmatic and controversial figure. Many of the reviews indicate that this performance is indeed a career highlight for the actor, even if the film doesn't offer much insight into who Dick Cheney actually is. Collider's Matt Goldberg gave the film an A- and explained that the 'who' is not as important as the 'what':

Bale is uncanny as Cheney, completely slipping into a taciturn figure and making you forget there's even an actor there. But it's not in service of understanding Cheney as much as it's trying to paint a picture of what Cheney was involved in.

Those are all pretty positive reviews, but Vice is proving polarizing. While some reviewers were fans of Adam McKay's tone and approach, others found it to be more style than substance. Variety's Owen Gleiberman found the film lacking when it came to its main subject, as he explained:

As outrageous, and entertainingly horrible, as much of this is to watch, like a feature-length Saturday Night Live skit staged by the editors of Politico, none of it comes close to confronting the question I went into a 2-hour-and-12-minute film about Dick Cheney in ardent hopes of getting an answer to. Namely: Who is Dick Cheney?

Those who disliked the film seemed to take issue with it not so much on political grounds, but the fact that Vice is a preaching to the choir and having a laugh without offering any nuance or real insight. The Wrap's Candice Frederick

Maybe McKay wasn't really trying to indict anyone here, which is fine. But what's missing in this and even The Big Short is a strong filmmaker's voice. He's not saying anything, just poking fun.

For the most part, reviewers seem to have either really liked Vice and what Adam McKay did with the film or to have really disliked it. IndieWire's Eric Kohn however, was able to take both good and bad away from the film in his B- review. He said:

Buoyed by a brilliant transformation by Christian Bale, it offers a smart and detailed overview of Cheney's elaborate ruse to exploit the country's highest authority, but undercuts its authority with crass and often clunky humor that overstates the nature of Cheney's villainy.

Clearly Vice is not for everyone, but to me it sounds like if you liked Adam McKay's The Big Short, you may find something to like here. You can judge for yourself when Vice opens in theaters on Christmas Day.

When you take a job as a bodyguard, you go in with the knowledge that things could get messy (just ask Richard Maddens character in Bodyguard). The messiness of the job though hasnt stopped Ryan Reynolds bodyguard Michael Bryce from returning for the sequel to 2017s The Hitmans Bodyguard, titled The Hitmans Wifes Bodyguard. Ryan Reynolds must be doing a solid job protecting Samuel L. Jacksons and Salma Hayeks Darius and Sonia Kincaid, if he is the only one with blood on him and theyre both pristine and smiling. Watching Deadpool and Nick Fury play off each other in the first film was one of its strengths, and with Salma Hayeks character set to play a bigger role in the sequel, the three actors look to be having a great time together.

In his Instagram post, Ryan Reynolds says Two guys, a girl and, which is a reference to his television series Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place which ran on ABC for four seasons from 1998-2001. Although the gender makeup of the trio echoes that sitcom and there will definitely be some laughs, Im pretty sure thats supposed to be blood, not pizza sauce.

The end of The Hitmans Bodyguard saw Michael Bryce rekindle his relationship with his ex-girlfriend and restore his reputation after thwarting Gary Oldmans dictator. Sonia Kincaid was released from prison and hitman Darius escaped prison to be with her. The sequel film will reunite this unlikely trio for a new adventure set on the Amalfi coast where they will have to be the good guys in order to save Europe from a dangerous zealot.

Joining Ryan Reynolds, Salma Hayek and Samuel L. Jackson in The Hitmans Wifes Bodyguard is a star-studded group of faces both new and returning. Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant reprises his role as Seifert and he stars alongside Frank Grillo, Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman. That last name is especially exciting because despite the literally hundreds of credits between them, this comedy action-thriller will be the first time that Samuel L. Jackson and Morgan Freeman have starred in a feature film together.

Patrick Hughes returns to the directors chair for the Lionsgate and Millennium Media title. The Hitmans Wifes Bodyguard is now filming and has yet to set an official release date. The Hitmans Bodyguard debuted in August of 2017 and enjoyed three weekends atop the domestic box office, finishing its run with $176.6 million worldwide on a budget of $30 million.
