How Much Star Wars: Episode IX Is Using Dominic Monaghan

If we've learned anything from the new Star Wars: Episode IX casting, it's that it pays to know J.J. Abrams. Two actors from the director's past in television recently joined the star-studded cast: Felicity alum Keri Russell and Lost actor Dominic Monaghan. Monaghan, who is also widely known for his role in the Lord of the Rings, started filming on the set of Episode IX in the beginning of September. Details as to how big of a role the fresh cast will bring to the trilogy closer will likely be under wraps until the film's release but Monaghan did share a little bit of information about his character's current place in the film. Here's what he said:

Because J.J. [Abrams] is a friend of mine, he had said to me that at some point I'd get the opportunity to read the script. He said, 'Just be aware of the fact that there are massive sequences in Act 2, there are massive sequences in Act 3, but because we're shooting Act 1 first, I've put you in there and you seem to not be around as much in Act 2 and Act 3, but that's because that's what we're doing first so I want you here, I want you invested. So read the script, but just know there won't be long until there'll be a re-draft of those things and we'll see you a little bit more.' So I read it, and the script is amazing and obviously there's not a lot I can say.

Developing a film as huge as Star Wars often requires a lot of rewrites and reshoots. As of now it seems like the cast and crew are heavily focusing on Act 1, so that's where Dominic Monaghan's character is most prevalently seen in the script. The actor talked about the process while on the podcast Distraction Pieces, where he detailed the process of nabbing the role of a lifetime. Monaghan said that him and J.J. Abrams clicked immediately when the pilot episode of Lost was being filmed back in 2004. They have a lot of the same "geeky" interests, and the actor is well acquainted with Abrams' family as well.

When J.J. Abrams was working on Force Awakens, Dominic Monaghan approached his friend with interest, and J.J. Abrams said he would keep him in mind. For Force Awakens however, he was looking for newcomers, which Abrams found in Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. For The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson took the reins, making it clear to Monaghan that he wouldn't be in the second one either. However, with Abrams returning for Episode IX, this was his chance. Monaghan even took a break from working for a while in hopes of getting the call and needing to be available, thanks to some playful hints from the director. It all thankfully paid off when Disney reached out to him and he got his hands on the script.

While Dominic Monaghan obviously can't say much about the upcoming Star Wars film, he said it has been an emotional process thus far that's included a warm hug from Chewbacca himself. Star Wars: Episode IX will be in theaters on December 20, 2019.

The Suicide Squad Is In Pre-Production, And James Gunn Is 'Enormously Excited'

Director James Gunn has had an eventful year, with controversy that harkens back to last July. When controversial tweets from a decade ago resurfaced, Gunn was unceremoniously fired from his Guardians of the Galaxy franchise by Disney. And while he's been reinstated to complete the trilogy, the gap in his schedule allowed for him to switch to the DC side of things, and pick up a gig with The Suicide Squad.

Information regarding The Suicide Squad has been slowly coming out, as the cast is assembled. But now James Gunn has finally opened up about the development process of his DC semi reboot, recently saying:

I am in pre-production on The Suicide Squad, which I am enormously excited about.

While not exactly a mind-blowing update, it's exciting to see James Gunn finally commenting on his highly anticipated DCEU gig. And it's ultimately a blockbuster that will arrive before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ever hits theaters.

James Gunn's comments to EW are enough to get his fans exciting for The Suicide Squad, and what the director/writer's vision will bring to the titular team of villains. While David Ayer's original film teased a colorful and motley crew in its Queen-fueled trailer, the final product failed to really connect with audiences. It still managed to make a ton of money and even pick up on Oscar, but it wasn't the rowdy and quirky movie fans were hoping for.

But The Suicide Squad might be the opportunity for the franchise to get back on track, and James Gunn seems like the perfect filmmaker to do it. Gunn did the impossible with his work in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The group of zany characters weren't exactly household names, and it was a challenge to assemble cast members like Chris Pratt. But the first two movies were massive successes, and the Guardians quickly became some of the most popular characters in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

If James Gunn is able to put as much vision into The Suicide Squad as he did for Guardians, the property could end up becoming one of DC's most vital. Following the disappointing performance of Justice League and Batman v Superman, Warner Bros. seems to be moving away from serialized storytelling. Instead, projects are not crossover-heavy, allowing directors to have more creative freedom over their individual movie. It's a method that worked for Aquaman and Shazam!, and will hopefully do wonders for Gunn's process as well.

Not much is known about The Suicide Squad, but there will be a mixture of familiar faces and new talent. James Gunn was reportedly approaching the movie as a reboot, although the inclusion of returning characters like Captain Boomerang and Amanda Waller seem to contradict those reports. We'll just have to wait for more official information from Gunn himself.

DC's live-action universe has had an interesting journey, and it's continued to be unpredictable as movies, directors, and cast members are announced, and then cancelled. One of the still developing projects is Matt Reeves' Batman movie, which was originally set to penned and helmed by Ben Affleck. Plenty of things have changed since then, and it's still unclear when the blockbuster might begin filming, or what actor will star as the title character. Fans have also been kept wondering about what Ben Affleck's original movie would have included, and now we've got a taste of its quality from DC storyboard artist Jay Oliva. When he was recently asked about the project on Twitter, he responded, saying:

The original Affleck script was the best Batman script I've ever read. Ben had a kick ass story and I believe that the audience and fans would have loved it.

Is anyone else's FOMO going through the roof? Fans will never see the original Batfleck solo film, and the added knowledge of how good the draft was is like rubbing salt in a wound. Especially as Ben Affleck's health and professional life remain unclear.

Jay Oliva' recent Tweet is sure to inspire countless fan theories, as moviegoers wonder what Ben Affleck's original intentions for The Batman might have been. There have been plenty of rumors throughout the years, ranging from a multi-villain ensemble project in Arkham Asylum, to a more intimate look at Batman's psyche, and the loss he'd suffered as Gotham's protector. While Oliva is likely under contract not to reveal the specifics, the DC collaborator still thinks highly of the original draft.

The idea that Ben Affleck's planned Batman flick was the best Batman script Jay Oliva ever heard is saying something, and will likely trigger the umbrage of the hardcore Christopher Nolan fans out there. Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy are universally acclaimed, even earning Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker. Of course, it's important to note that Oliva didn't work as a storyboard artist on that trilogy; but he has done a ton of work on Batman animated films, as well as the live-action DCEU.

Batman is one of the most popular comic book characters of all time, so fans are eager to see him get a new movie in the current DC universe. While Ben Affleck's version of the character was the best part of Batman v Superman, he's yet to get his own project to carry. Director Matt Reeves has teased that the role might not be occupied by Ben Affleck, and with the actor currently seeking treatment for his substance abuse problems, he's especially absent from talks. The Joker will actually end up getting his own movie first, with Todd Phillips directing Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime.
