The 5 Movies That Have Made The Most Money So Far This Year
While we're only about to cross into the third month of 2018's calendar year, the results for this year's burgeoning box office have started to be released online. The results are predictable in some aspects, surprising in others and altogether a good sign that this year at the movies is going to be an interesting one to say the least. Keep in mind, these numbers are only for the domestic market; but with that disclaimer in mind, here's how the best of the best at the 2018 box office looks so far!
Black Panther - $411.7 mil. Fifty Shades Freed - $90.4 mil. Peter Rabbit - $72 mil. Insidious: The Last Key - $67.3 mil. The Maze Runner: The Death Cure - $56.4 mil.
Sitting at the top of the roost, unsurprisingly, is Marvel's Black Panther, which is more than likely going to cross the $1 billion mark after this weekend's international haul. This is on top of the film's current standing as not only the biggest opening weekend in February, it's also the third best opening weekend in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Running down the rest of the line, we see that Fifty Shades Freed is in a healthy position to possibly outpace the $114.6 million domestic gross of its predecessor, Fifty Shades Darker. And while Peter Rabbit may be third in the domestic standings for 2018's box office market thus far, you'll see that Paddington 2 is the true kids' champ on the international circuit.
Finally, rounding out the top 5 list are a particularly interesting set of sequels, as Insidious: The Last Key has ranked in as the second highest domestic showing for the fluctuating franchise with $67.3 million. Meanwhile, The Maze Runner: The Death Cure signals the end of its franchise with its $56.4 million domestic gross looking like a pale shadow of The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' ultimate $81.7 million finish.
With the numbers clear as day on Box Office Mojo, the early part of the 2018 has a clear winner, with some distance to go between Black Panther and its competition. Naturally, these numbers are going to change, and with them the standings, each time a new mega-tentpole is released and allowed to burn up the box office. But if any of these films are lucky, they'll be the Beauty and the Beast of 2018, as that film was released in March of 2017 and managed to finish as the second highest-grossing film of that year's market -- behind only Star Wars: The Last Jedi, of course.
